“ON THE LINE.” Coach screamed yet again. A small collection of foam gathered at corners of his mouth where top lip meets bottom. His whistle dangled around his neck like a chain — veins ready to burst from screaming. Spit spewed from his mouth as he shouted.
His face was red with rage.
It was my freshman year of college.
Fall camp had just finished — school was now in session. Most people dread the start of school.
Not football players.
It isn’t because we loved class. No — definitely not. It’s because school meant Fall training camp was over.
Classes meant no more two-a-day practices. No more 6AM meetings every morning or film review sessions that lasted until quarter to midnight. With school in session, we had something else to take up our part of our day besides football.
Now that the semester began, there were more people on campus which totally rocked because frankly, being around the same guys — and as a freshmen, total strangers — 18 hours a day 14 days straight was exhausting. We were sick of each other. More people on campus and less time at practice was the break we desperately needed.
